Rejection from Your Dream College
Handling Setbacks with Strength
November 1st marks the early admissions deadline for many universities. As students scramble to finish their essays and cross all their t’s and dot all their i’s on their applications, the anxiety is palpable.
Between research and campus visits, students have inevitably fallen in love with a particular school, and all their hopes and dreams for the future hinge on that acceptance letter.
Everything in life has been leading up to this moment. All the years of hard work come down to a click of the submit button and the excruciating wait to hear back. Will it be a yes or a no?
Getting into your first-choice college is the finish line, but what happens when the decision from your dream school arrives as a rejection?
In the March 22, 2025, Forbes article “Rejected From Your Dream College? Here’s What To Do Next, by Sara Sternholm, there are two pieces of great advice:
Take 48 hours to process your emotions. Do not make any decisions or take any action during this timeframe and avoid social media.
After 48 hours, answer the following questions:
What did you want from your dream school?
Which of those elements are available elsewhere?
Which elements were unique to that institution?
Sternholm reports, “This exercise frequently reveals that 80% or more of what attracted students to their dream school is available at other institutions…”
Disappointment is understandable, but college decisions are not judgments of worth. Admissions officers build classes based on institutional needs, not personal shortcomings. Thousands of qualified students are turned away each year for reasons beyond their control. This is not a reflection of who they are or what they can achieve. It’s simply one path closing so another can open.
There are countless colleges where students thrive, find lifelong friends, and uncover unexpected passions. With time and perspective, this setback can become the very experience that builds the confidence, humility, and resilience it takes to be successful in life.
